UrbanPLR Review – Is It a Scam?

You know the old saying:

“If something looks too good to be true, it probably is”.

But does this apply to UrbanPLR.com?

In my opinion, yes it does. The following review is my experience of buying a product from them.

What Is UrbanPLR?

What Are PLR Products?

PLR stands for Private Label Rights. On the homepage of urbanplr.com, under Frequently Asked Questions, they say:

“The word “PLR” stands for “Private Label Rights”. PLR contents (articles, ebooks, images, videos, templates, presentations etc.) are the content that gives you the right to edit, change or modify it and use it as your own however you want.”

So with a PLR license, you can basically do whatever you want with that content.

However, there are other types of licenses that are more restrictive:

MRR – Master Resell Rights

You can resell the product, along with the license that will also allow your buyer to resell it, but you cannot edit the product in any way.

RR – Resell Rights
You can sell the product as is, but not a license that will allow your buyer to resell it. Again, editing the product is forbidden.

Licenses can, and normally do, have more detailed breakdowns of rights included or restricted for that product. For example:

  • If it can be packaged with other products
  • If it can be used as web content
  • If it can be sold on auction sites

But with UrbanPLR, they’re basically saying you don’t have to concern yourself with any of this because you can use it as your own however you want”.

What Do UrbanPLR Claim To Offer?

Well they’re not called UrbanMRR or UrbanRR, so it should be pretty obvious just from their name, shouldn’t it?

They are very clear that they sell PLR digital products. According to their own definition above, you can edit and change their products however you like.

Here are a couple more quotes from their homepage:

“All our products on UrbanPLR are copyright-free, that means you can use, edit or sell any products without worrying about any license.”

Once you buy the membership, all contents are yours. But we suggest doing some modifications for better results.”

What Did I Buy?

Tempting as the $99.00 for everything offer was, I decided to just try out a bundle first to check the quality. If it was any good, I would probably then get the full package.

As I have a pet website, I opted to go for the Pets Bundle. The idea was to get some ebooks that I could re-brand, edit, and improve, and then give away to visitors coming to my site.

At this price point I wasn’t expecting super high quality, so I was fully expecting to put some work in to bring the ebooks up to the standard I like my content to have.

But it turns out this wouldn’t be possible…

PLR Certificate & Licensing Terms

When I bought the bundle I received an email. Attached was a PDF containing a certificate that again says:

“you may use, edit or resell this product… you are agreeing to the licensing terms as stayed* on on the website”.

(*I’m pretty sure they meant stated)

The closest thing I could find on the website to “licensing terms” was this:

Copyright Free Products
All the products on UrbanPLR are 100% copyright-free. You can use them in printed media, sell prints on eBay*, bundle them up and sell, give it free to your subscriber. You can do anything you want with these products. No restrictions, no legal mumbo-jumbo!”

Below that on the PDF it includes the links to access the files.

Did It Deliver?

No. It did not.

Unless I can’t count that high, there are only 22 ebooks included, not the advertised 35+. And some of these are duplicates.

Many of them come with their own licenses restricting what you can do with them – including editing.

At least one of the licenses included with the eBooks states: “You CANNOT sell the product on auction sites such as eBay.com”, despite Urban PLR’s “licensing terms” (above) specifically saying you can. So confusing.

Out of all of them, I’ve managed to find one that isn’t terrible; but even then I’d want to rebrand it, which I cannot do.

The ones that do include a license allowing me to edit them (or have no individual license at all) would require so much work that I’d be better off starting afresh anyway.

To give you an idea of how bad it is:

One of the ebooks was about recipes for dogs. Many of these recipes contained garlic.

“Can dogs eat garlic? The answer, emphatically, is no.”

The American Kennel Club

There was also a delightful book titled “How To Buy A Shock Dog Collar”.

Customer Support

Clearly there must be some kind of mistake with the included licenses, because urbanPLR.com clearly states that all the content can, and in fact should, be modified.

Either they are falsely advertising their products, or they have mistakenly included the wrong licenses.

Luckily for me, they claim to have “First-Class 24/7 Support“:

“Contact us with your query and our support staff will reply to you within 24 hours.”

…so I decided to reach out and ask them to clear up the confusion with the licenses.

I eagerly awaited their response as the hours ticked by, intrigued to know what they would say and how they would solve this problem.

Maybe they would simply send me the correct licenses? Perhaps apologise for the mistake and offer me a full refund despite their “no refunds” policy, or even just a free upgrade to the full package?

That was four weeks ago at the time of writing. I’m still waiting.

EDIT: it’s now been over two years. I’m pretty sure they’re ignoring me.

What About The Other Stuff In The Bundle?

So the ebooks were what I was really after, but seeing as how they’re useless to me lets see if we can find value in some of the other content included:

Articles
Many of the “articles” are just a couple of paragraphs. Again the quality overall is very much on the low side. And, of course, there are duplicates.

Images
The images are… surprisingly good! However, the lack of care that’s gone into this product overall is symbolised here by this picture of a dog:

Picture of a cow
Woof!

I happen to know a fair bit about dogs, but somehow I’m not familiar with this breed; can anyone enlighten me?

HD Videos
Some of them are OK stock footage, some are just home movies. Not bad as a bonus I suppose, but not a selling point.

Quotes
Quotes about pets put on top of some of the images. Pretty good, but most people looking at buying this could probably make something like this themselves quickly and easily, rather than searching for an appropriate quote here. I know I could. There are only twenty, not “50+”

Infographics
There are only three unique infographics, not “5+” (aka six) – how do you manage to duplicate content in such a small number? The three that are there are good though, if you happen to have a use for them.

How Is The User Interface?

Well… there isn’t one. UrbanPLR use file sharing sites to host their content, which don’t allow you to download multiple files at a time.

They really couldn’t have just hosted the files on their own servers?

If you want to download all the articles so you can browse through them, for example, you’ll have to download fourteen separate zip files one by one.

The images can be downloaded in bulk – if you pay for a premium membership on mediafire.com. If not, it’s one image at a time, and you need to click through multiple times for each one you want to download.

Of course, being just a file sharing site, there’s no search function for the images. So you need to scroll through all of them to find what you want (luckily they are at least separated by animal, mostly correctly).

This is annoying enough, but the images also randomly “jump around” as you scroll, making you lose track of where you are.

Are There Better Alternatives?

This was my first venture into a PLR bundle, so unfortunately I couldn’t tell you if there is anything worth it out there. Let me know in the comments if there’s a good provider you’ve found (or any others that are just as bad and should be avoided!).

To get unique content written for you though, I highly recommend iwriter.com. I use them regularly and have had great results using the “Premium” writer level. Normally very little has to be changed with what comes back, but you can choose a higher level if you want something outstanding.

Wrapping Up

The definition of a scam is:

“A fraudulent or deceptive act or operation”

Merriam-Webster

I didn’t get what I paid for: namely 35+ eBooks that I can edit and re-brand. The “First-Class 24/7” support they advertise still hasn’t responded after two weeks.

But maybe that’s just me expecting too much.

Luckily, due to the nature of the product, I can actually share it with you. You can check it out and decide for yourself if it’s a scam, and if you want to buy products from them.

I know I won’t be doing so again.

Free Downloads!

As I can apparently do whatever I want with this content, I choose to give it away to you, for free, with all the same rights bestowed upon me by UrbanPLR.com (unfortunately I’m still not entirely clear what they are so use at your own risk).

I only left out the dog recipe and shock collar eBooks.

I’ve compressed the files into groups so you can download them easily from this site:

Articles
Ebooks
InfoGraphics
Quotes

Videos
Birds
Cats
Cows
Dogs
Horses
Other Pets

Images
I wasn’t about to painstakingly download 600+ images individually (or count them for that matter – I’ll assume they’re all there), so you can find them at their home on mediafire.
